New Vic Theatre Extension And Refurbishment

Opened in 1986, The New Vic Theatre here in Newcastle-under-Lyme was the first purpose built, theatre-in-the-round in Europe.  It was originally designed by our very own consultant John Sambrook, whilst working at Hollins, Jones and Oldacre.  Hewitt&Carr were honoured to be approached by the theatre to not only revitalise the building but to extend it to provide much needed additional seating for the many people that attend to see the amazing productions that are shown here.

The refurbishment consisted or works to the existing café servery, a full internal re-decoration and re-carpeting along with new fixed and loose furniture.  Hewitt&Carr were also commissioned to re-visit the ticket counter and bar area to modernise the building whilst retaining its existing charm and character.

Externally we were commissioned to enclose the existing external balcony and create additional internal seating for the bar and café.  This meant a redesign of the external elevation and a new feature external stair case.  The existing trees on the site provided us with our concept of creating a treehouse type structure that looked out over the grounds to their workshop and rehearsal space.
